Bitcoin at $61,000 as Metaplanet Reaches 43,000 BTC

  • Japan’s Metaplanet increased its Bitcoin treasury to 43,000 BTC after purchasing 2,823 BTC for approximately $221 million during the second quarter.
  • The acquisition places the company just 514 BTC behind Twenty One Capital, making it the world’s third-largest publicly disclosed corporate Bitcoin holder.
  • Bitcoin traded above $61,000 following the announcement, extending its recent recovery as corporate treasury demand continues to support market sentiment.

Metaplanet strengthened its position among the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holders after announcing the purchase of 2,823 BTC during the second quarter, increasing its total treasury to 43,000 Bitcoin.

The latest acquisition, valued at approximately $221 million, moves the Tokyo-listed company within striking distance of Twenty One Capital, which currently holds around 43,514 BTC, while Strategy remains the industry’s dominant corporate holder with more than 847,000 BTC.

The purchase further reinforces Metaplanet’s aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy, making the company one of the most closely watched institutional buyers outside the United States.

Corporate Bitcoin Race Intensifies

Metaplanet has rapidly transformed itself into Asia’s largest corporate BTC treasury through a financing model inspired by Strategy.

Rather than treating Bitcoin as a diversification asset, the company has adopted a Bitcoin-first treasury strategy, using equity issuance, moving strike warrants and other capital market instruments to continuously expand its holdings.

Management evaluates performance using its proprietary BTC Yield metric, which measures Bitcoin accumulation on a fully diluted per-share basis. The objective is to ensure every financing round increases the amount of Bitcoin attributable to shareholders rather than simply expanding the balance sheet.

The latest purchase also narrows the gap with Twenty One Capital to just 514 BTC, intensifying competition among the world’s largest institutional Bitcoin holders.

Bitcoin Extends Rally Above $61,000

The announcement coincided with continued strength across the cryptocurrency market.

At the time of writing BTC trades around $61,140, its highest level in several days, after breaking above the $60,000 psychological resistance level. The move places the cryptocurrency comfortably above its 20-day, 50-day and 100-day moving averages, while the 200-day moving average continues to provide longer-term support near $59,300.

From a technical perspective, the next resistance zone sits near $61,200-$61,500, while initial support has shifted toward $60,400 following the breakout.

Momentum indicators also strengthened, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) climbing above 72, suggesting short-term buying momentum has accelerated into overbought territory. Although elevated RSI readings can precede temporary pullbacks, they also reflect strong bullish participation during breakout phases.

Institutional Demand Remains a Key Driver

Metaplanet’s latest purchase underscores the growing role corporate balance sheets continue to play in Bitcoin’s market structure.

Unlike previous market cycles that relied heavily on retail speculation, institutional treasury strategies have become an increasingly important source of structural demand. Public companies continue accumulating Bitcoin despite macroeconomic uncertainty, viewing the asset as a long-term reserve rather than a short-term trading position.

The trend has accelerated globally throughout 2026 as corporations seek alternative treasury assets capable of preserving purchasing power while offering exposure to digital assets.

Beyond Bitcoin Accumulation

Metaplanet has also expanded beyond treasury management into broader financial services.

In June, the company completed the acquisition of Siiibo Securities, strengthening its ability to integrate Bitcoin-related financial products into its broader corporate strategy.

The move reflects management’s ambition to build a comprehensive Bitcoin-focused financial platform rather than operate solely as a passive treasury vehicle.

As institutional adoption continues to expand, Metaplanet’s rapid accumulation strategy is increasingly positioning the company as one of Asia’s most influential participants in the global Bitcoin ecosystem.
