Brazil Wants Crypto at the Core of BRICS Trade—What It Means

  • Brazil is prioritizing crypto and blockchain-based payment solutions for BRICS trade during its 2025 presidency.
  • The country is also integrating blockchain and AI into its postal service to enhance logistics and operations.

Brazil is looking to make cryptocurrency a key component of trade between BRICS nations as it takes over the group’s rotating presidency for 2025.

According to local reports, the country plans to introduce blockchain-based payment systems to streamline financial transactions within the bloc, which now includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia.

The South American nation aims to make cross-border transactions smoother by leveraging blockchain technology for import and export deals. It is one aspect of the general trend towards the use of digital currencies to reduce the use of traditional bank infrastructure.

Stablecoins pegged at fixed rates to the traditional currencies, are used widely for cross-border transactions, especially in emerging economies.

A key development in this initiative is Drex, a pilot project by the country’s central bank. Designed to enable tokenized financial transactions, Drex seeks to modernize Brazil’s financial infrastructure.

But the challenge is to balance regulatory control with decentralized technologies. If it can be achieved, this model can be adopted by BRICS nations to reduce dependence on traditional financial intermediaries.

One such option on the table is to incorporate national payment systems, such as the Brazilian Pix, into a more integrated BRICS financial network. While this would facilitate transactions, governance, and sovereignty are at issue.

The controversy is likely to intensify throughout the year with the government seeking to balance regulatory control with innovation.

Brazil Expands Blockchain Use Beyond Trade

Brazil‘s blockchain ambitions extend beyond international trade. Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos, the Brazilian post office, launched an initiative to incorporate blockchain and artificial intelligence into its logistics network.

There is an open pre-selection procedure for organizations with such expertise to collaborate with the purpose of enhancing the post.

This is one step towards the overall vision to achieve operational efficiency through technological advancements. The post office will employ blockchain to improve package tracing, smooth logistics, and secure transactions. AI-based technologies are also being contemplated to optimize route planning and resource management.

Through the invitation for private sector cooperation, Correios aims to facilitate innovation through orderly debates and jointly created solutions. It is expected to provide new business prospects for technology companies while making Brazil the leader in the adoption of blockchain for the public sector.

The project reflects the growing trend by governments to adopt decentralized solutions in their operations for improved efficiency and security.

BRICS Pushes Crypto and Blockchain for Independence

The BRICS call for the adoption of blockchain comes in response to the need for the BRICS states to diversify beyond the use of Western payment networks. With increased global interest in alternative payment networks, blockchain technologies can offer greater autonomy and efficiency in trade.

Brazil’s presidency would lead to broader adoption of the digital financial infrastructure throughout BRICS, integrating blockchain and crypto into the global economy completely.

Although problems persist, the effort marks the beginning of the transition towards an increasingly technologically advanced and self-sustaining financial system.
