What is a Canonical Token Bridge?

A canonical token bridge facilitates the transfer of assets to and from other blockchains within a specific blockchain ecosystem, allowing non-native tokens (i.e. tokens originally issued on another blockchain) to be “wrapped” into tokens backed 1:1 by tokens on the original chain.

Users can burn these wrapped tokens at any time to retrieve the underlying tokens on the source network. The key differentiation of canonical bridges from other bridges is that the wrapped tokens they create are considered the “official” version of that token within the ecosystem, being used by most users and protocols.

  • Speed and Fragmentation: Some bridges, such as those used for layer-2 optimistic rollups, impose a seven-day challenge period, which can deteriorate user experience and liquidity conditions.
