- Total crypto market capitalization increased 6.31% to $2.46 trillion.
- Bitcoin trades above $72,000 while Ethereum advanced past $2,300.
- XRP and Hyperliquid led large-cap performance with double-digit daily gains.
- The Fear & Greed Index reached 62, shifting market sentiment into greed.
Crypto extended its August 20 rally as total market capitalization reached $2.46 trillion, but the latest session looks increasingly different from a Bitcoin-only move. Bitcoin held above $72,000 while Ethereum, XRP, Hyperliquid and several other large-cap assets recorded stronger percentage gains, pointing to a broader expansion in risk appetite after the initial BTC-led breakout.
Bitcoin Holds $72,000 While Ethereum Gains Ground
At the time of writing BTC trades at $72,269, up 5.42% over 24 hours and 14.02% across seven days. Its market capitalization reached approximately $1.45 trillion, keeping BTC firmly at the center of the market’s latest expansion.
Yet Bitcoin is no longer producing the strongest returns among major cryptocurrencies.
Ethereum reached $2,318, gaining 11.04% in a day and 23.44% over the week. That means ETH has appreciated at roughly twice Bitcoin’s 24-hour rate, an important change after BTC initially dominated the market recovery.
The distinction matters because broad crypto rallies generally become less dependent on Bitcoin once capital begins accepting more risk elsewhere. Ethereum’s relative strength is one indication that the current advance has entered that phase.
XRP and Hyperliquid Are Taking the Lead
The clearest evidence of rotation appears further down the large-cap rankings.
XRP climbed 17.78% in 24 hours to $1.25, extending its seven-day gain to 25.49%. Its market capitalization has consequently risen to roughly $78.8 billion.

Hyperliquid’s HYPE performed similarly, reaching $73.06 after an 18.14% daily advance. It has gained 26.31% over seven days, giving it the strongest weekly performance among several of the large-cap assets shown in the latest market snapshot.
Other cryptocurrencies participated, but with very different intensity:
- Solana: $87.19, up 6.54% over 24 hours and 15.31% over seven days.
- Dogecoin: $0.07999, gaining 9.98% daily and 14.78% weekly.
- Chainlink: $10.69, up 7.16% in 24 hours and 22.63% over the week.
- BNB: $651.25, gaining 5.50% daily and 7.18% weekly.
- Zcash: $571.63, up 3.63% over 24 hours and 17.41% over seven days.
- TRON: $0.3394, adding a comparatively modest 1.80% during the session.
The dispersion is useful. Investors are not buying every cryptocurrency at the same rate. XRP, HYPE, ETH and LINK are attracting substantially stronger momentum, while assets such as BNB and TRX are participating more conservatively.
That is more consistent with selective capital rotation than an indiscriminate altcoin rally.
Market Breadth Is Improving, but Bitcoin Still Sets the Conditions
There is a temptation to interpret double-digit altcoin returns as the beginning of a full rotation away from Bitcoin. The data does not establish that yet.
Bitcoin remains by far the market’s largest source of capitalization, and its ability to maintain the recent breakout is still important for risk appetite elsewhere. A stable BTC price can actually be constructive for altcoins because traders become more willing to move capital down the risk curve when Bitcoin stops absorbing most of the market’s attention.
A sharp Bitcoin reversal would produce a different environment. Higher-beta assets that outperform during the advance can also react more aggressively when liquidity retreats.
The current session therefore matters less because altcoins are simply “up” and more because several are now outperforming BTC while Bitcoin itself remains strong. That combination gives capital more room to rotate without requiring investors to abandon the market’s largest asset.
$1.9 Billion in Liquidations Shows How Violent the Repricing Became
Derivatives positioning provides another explanation for the speed of the advance.
CoinMarketCap data showed approximately $1.9 billion in cryptocurrency liquidations over 24 hours. Large liquidations can accelerate an existing market move because leveraged positions are forcibly closed as prices cross margin thresholds.
For short sellers, that means buying pressure can become self-reinforcing. Rising prices trigger liquidations, exchanges close bearish positions, and those closures can add further upward pressure during periods when liquidity is already stretched.
This helps explain why some assets have moved considerably faster than changes in their underlying fundamentals alone would imply.
Sentiment has responded quickly. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index reached 62, placing the market in “Greed” territory. That is a substantial shift in positioning psychology, but it also means traders are operating in a less cautious environment than they were before the breakout.
The Rally Is Entering a More Demanding Phase
The next test is no longer simply whether Bitcoin can print another higher price.
Market breadth now matters. If Ethereum, XRP, Solana, HYPE and LINK retain relative strength while Bitcoin consolidates above its breakout area, the rally would become less reliant on continuous BTC appreciation.
There is already evidence of that transition, but not enough to call it a market-wide altcoin regime. Stablecoins remain among the largest assets by capitalization, performance across major tokens is uneven, and some of the strongest daily moves have occurred alongside heavy derivatives liquidations.
For the next sessions, the more revealing signal will be whether today’s leaders can retain their gains once liquidation-driven buying subsides. XRP and HYPE have advanced more than 25% over seven days, Ethereum more than 23%, and Chainlink above 22%. Holding a meaningful portion of those gains after leverage normalizes would provide stronger evidence that capital rotation has moved beyond a short-term squeeze.
