The IOTA Foundation issued the alpha version of IOTA Identity, a decentralized identity framework, which supports improved digital interactions through the introduction of self-sovereign identity (SSI) and verifiable credentials.

The technology is designed to address growing demand for secure, privacy-focused digital identity solutions across industries.

IOTA Identity runs on the MoveVM-based IOTA Testnet, replacing the previous Stardust VM with the more advanced MoveVM. The shift improves on-chain programmability while preserving privacy through off-chain verifiable credentials.

IOTA Identity adheres to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Decentralized Identifiers (DID) standards, providing a blend of immutable decentralized infrastructure and user-owned personal data.

In today’s digital world, authenticity and integrity of data are at a premium. Centralized identity systems have long brought challenges related to user control and security, introducing intermediaries and creating single points of failure.

IOTA Identity allows individuals, organizations, and devices to create and manage their digital identities directly, hereby reducing reliance on third parties and improving security in digital transactions.

Applications and Industry Impact

The versatile character of IOTA Identity is applied in various industries. In financial services, the technology supports Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance, digital signatures, and fraud prevention, streamlining operations and improving transaction security.

In supply chains, product origin verification and audit trails are enabled, bringing in transparency and trust among consumers as well as business partners. In healthcare, IOTA Identity secures patient records and allows privacy-preserving data sharing, improving patient confidentiality and data management.

For the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart infrastructure, it authenticates devices and enables trusted machine-to-machine communication, improving the security of connected systems.

Governments and enterprises can also use IOTA Identity for e-government services and corporate identity management, improving administrative efficiency and security.

The alpha release invites developers to integrate IOTA Identity into their applications, with the goal of promoting innovation in secure digital interactions. By combining SSI principles with a decentralized ledger, IOTA Identity positions itself as a scalable solution for verifiable digital interactions.

As digital ecosystems grow, the need for secure, user-controlled identity solutions becomes increasingly urgent.  IOTA Identity’s solution is international standards-compliant and uses decentralized technology to empower users, reduce fraud, and improve privacy.
