Kraken Brings Regulated Crypto Perpetual Futures to U.S.

  • Kraken launched regulated perpetual futures for U.S. traders.
  • The products are offered through CFTC-regulated infrastructure.
  • The move expands U.S. access to a market dominated by offshore venues.

According to a blog post, Kraken has launched CFTC-regulated perpetual futures trading for eligible U.S. clients, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the American crypto derivatives market.

The move brings one of the industry’s most popular trading products onshore under U.S. regulatory oversight and expands access to a market that generated more than $60 trillion in trading volume globally last year.

Kraken Opens U.S. Access to Perpetual Futures

The launch allows eligible U.S. customers to trade cryptocurrency perpetual futures directly through Kraken Pro, giving domestic traders access to a product that has historically been concentrated on offshore exchanges.

Perpetual futures are among the most widely traded instruments in digital assets because they provide leveraged exposure to cryptocurrency prices without requiring traders to own the underlying asset. Unlike traditional futures contracts, perpetuals do not expire and instead rely on a funding-rate mechanism to keep contract prices aligned with spot markets.

At launch, Kraken’s offering supports major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Chainlink, Dogecoin, Litecoin and Avalanche.

The contracts operate with funding payments every eight hours. When perpetual prices trade above spot markets, long positions compensate short sellers. When perpetual prices trade below spot prices, short sellers pay longs. The mechanism helps maintain price alignment between derivatives and underlying assets.

Regulatory Structure Sets Kraken Apart

The rollout is built on infrastructure that operates entirely within the U.S. regulatory framework.

The contracts are listed through Bitnomial, the Chicago-based derivatives exchange, clearinghouse and brokerage acquired earlier this year by Kraken parent company Payward.

Clearing services are provided through Kraken Derivatives US, a registered Futures Commission Merchant operating under CFTC oversight.

The structure distinguishes Kraken’s offering from many offshore crypto derivatives platforms that have historically dominated the perpetual futures market. By bringing the product under established U.S. regulatory supervision, Kraken is positioning itself to capture demand from traders seeking a compliant alternative.

The launch also reflects a broader shift in the regulatory landscape. Policymakers and regulators have increasingly shown interest in expanding access to regulated digital asset products while encouraging activity to move onto domestic venues.

Building a Full-Service Crypto Trading Platform

The addition of perpetual futures further expands Kraken’s institutional and professional trading ecosystem.

Eligible users can now access spot trading, margin products, CME-listed crypto futures and perpetual futures from a single interface. The platform also allows traders to manage positions using the same collateral pool, improving capital efficiency and reducing operational complexity.

The strategy mirrors the structure used by major traditional financial institutions, where traders manage multiple asset classes and hedging strategies within unified accounts.

For Kraken, the launch represents another step in a broader U.S. expansion effort. The company introduced CME-listed cryptocurrency futures in 2025 and recently expanded margin trading capabilities for domestic clients.

Some analysts view the move as an important test of whether regulated U.S. platforms can successfully compete with offshore exchanges that have historically dominated the global derivatives market. If adoption proves strong, the launch could accelerate the migration of crypto derivatives activity toward regulated American venues.

The stakes are substantial. Perpetual futures account for the majority of global cryptocurrency derivatives trading volume, making them one of the most influential products in digital asset markets. Kraken’s entry into the segment could therefore mark a turning point in the development of a more mature and regulated U.S. crypto trading ecosystem.
