- NEAR is pressing the upper edge of a trading range it has held since early summer.
- Its 20, 50 and 200-day averages now line up in bullish order beneath the price.
- NEAR Intents went live on Hydration, widening cross-chain access to Zcash.
- Open interest sits near yearly highs as capital chases the AI infrastructure story.
NEAR Protocol traded near $2.82 on Thursday, up close to 16% over the past 24 hours, as the token pushed against the top of a range that has boxed it in since June. The move arrived with rising futures positioning, a fresh integration for its cross-chain Intents product, and a market increasingly willing to price NEAR as settlement infrastructure for AI agents rather than as a generic layer-1. Whether the ceiling gives way this time depends less on one daily candle and more on whether the fundamentals under it keep compounding.
Grayscale’s ETF filing and T. Rowe Price gave the AI story real buyers
NEAR spent most of 2026 rebuilding its identity around artificial intelligence. The project now markets itself openly as the blockchain for AI, backing that claim with on-chain data, architecture and institutional signals, and its published roadmap sets priorities around AI-Intents convergence, user-owned AI, and turning NEAR Intents into a leading on-chain trading venue. The technical case runs alongside a privacy argument that co-founder Illia Polosukhin has pushed at industry events, where he framed privacy as the decisive infrastructure layer for an AI-agent economy and introduced a combined hardware-backed stack to keep agent data sovereign.
That story has started to attract allocators who do not usually touch mid-cap tokens. A filing to convert the Grayscale NEAR Trust into a spot ETF landed in January 2026, shifting the framing from experimental tech toward investable infrastructure. In July, T. Rowe Price launched an actively managed multi-token spot crypto ETP, and inclusion in an actively managed product from a firm of that scale amounts to a formal underwriting of the AI-native blockchain thesis. None of this moves price on its own. It gives the base something to stand on when momentum fades.
Intents crossed $14 billion in volume well before its latest integrations
The clearest evidence that the AI framing is more than a slogan sits in NEAR Intents. The product lets a user state an outcome, for example swapping $200 from Bitcoin into a Solana token, and the protocol routes execution automatically instead of making the user manage wallets, bridges and gas across six chains. Relayers bundle and match the orders. That is exactly the kind of rail an autonomous agent needs to settle across networks without human hand-holding.
Usage has followed. Before its Brave Wallet integration, NEAR Intents had already processed over 19 million swaps and more than $14 billion in volume across 35 chains. The privacy corridor has been a standout: NEAR Intents expanded crosschain swapping to let users move 100-plus tokens directly into Zcash through a single transaction flow. This week added another venue. NEAR announced that Intents is now live on Hydration, letting that app’s users swap ZEC and NEAR cross-chain directly. Each integration widens the surface area where the token gets used rather than just traded.
All three key moving averages now sit below the price

NEAR trades above its 20, 50 and 200-day simple moving averages, and those three lines stack in ascending order, with the shortest sitting highest. Traders read that alignment as an uptrend that holds across timeframes rather than a single-session bounce. The 20-day average near $2.25 means the average closing price over the past three weeks sits well below current levels, so recent buyers are in profit and the short-term slope points up.
The caution flag is momentum. The 14-day RSI reads about 71, and readings above 70 signal that price has climbed fast enough to look stretched in the short term. That is a warning about pace, not a directional call. NEAR spent June through August roughly penned between $1.60 and $2.40, and the current push tests the upper boundary near prior swing highs around the $2.85 to $3.00 zone. A daily close and hold above that band is what would confirm a break. Without it, the range still runs the show.
Open interest near $656 million points to leverage, not just spot demand
The positioning data backs the price action. Open interest on NEAR futures stands near $656 million, close to its yearly highs, and it has climbed in step with price. When open interest rises as price rises, it usually means new money and fresh leverage are entering rather than shorts covering, which supports the trend but raises the risk of sharp liquidation cascades if price whipsaws.

Daily volume sits near $820 million, well above the summer lull, so this leg is drawing real participation. On-chain, NEAR’s DeFi total value locked jumped almost 15% in a single day to around $150 million, a sign that capital is rotating into the ecosystem itself and not only through exchange order books.

A weekly close above $3 would flip months of resistance into support
A weekly close above the $3.00 area would turn a zone that has capped NEAR for months into support, and it would open room toward higher references that some analysts place near $4. Those targets remain analyst projections, not settled levels, and they hinge on confirmed weekly closes rather than intraday wicks. The move comes straight out of a heavy macro week: the mid-September Federal Reserve decision and the latest inflation print both landed in the days before this push, and that backdrop can still steer token-specific flows for a session or two. Worth flagging for readers chasing the candle: at least one desk that ran the numbers could not tie NEAR’s September move to a single dated protocol event or verified catalyst, calling it an idiosyncratic rally without a confirmable driver. Momentum, in other words, is carrying part of this. The signals to watch next are a weekly close above the flip zone, the direction of Intents volume, and any flow data out of the new ETP and ETF vehicles, since those are what would tell you whether the AI bid is structural or just this cycle’s story.
