  • Topics include case law analysis, comparative digital currency regulation, and the regulatory roles of financial agencies.
  • Selected participants will receive financial support ranging from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 Chilean pesos for research activities.

The Law Faculty at the University of Chile has launched a competition to fund academic theses focusing on cryptocurrencies and digital payment methods. This call, open until Friday, November 10, 2024, invites students and graduates to contribute innovative research on the legal impacts and challenges of cryptocurrencies within both private and public law in Chile.

Scope and Objectives of the Initiative

This opportunity is part of the Fondecyt project titled “Dogmatic Challenges of Cryptocurrencies and Other Digital Payment Methods: Proposals for Chilean Private and Public Law.” The project is led by academic Gissella López Rivera.

The initiative allows applicants to explore a broad range of topics related to the usage and regulation of cryptocurrencies and other digital crypto payment systems. Highlighted topics include the analysis of case law concerning the financial risks of digital payments, comparative regulation of crypto currency issued by private entities or central banks, property rights concerning crypto assets, and the regulatory roles of financial agencies.

Applicants have the freedom to propose related research topics that could enhance the project’s study and offer fresh perspectives on the regulatory framework and adoption of cryptocurrencies in Chile.

Program Conditions and Financial Support

Selected students or graduates will undertake specific responsibilities in addition to receiving monetary support. Each fellow is required to register their thesis project under the supervision of Professor López Rivera, attend project meetings, collaborate on project publications, and submit progress reports on their thesis by specified deadlines.

Adherence to these deadlines is crucial for receiving full financial incentives, and failure to meet them may require the repayment of funds already disbursed. Financial support for winners ranges from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 Chilean pesos, approximately $1,000 to $2,000 annually. This funding aims to cover research and thesis development expenses and will be awarded progressively as project milestones and deadlines are met.

Impact and Motivation

Beyond promoting academic advancement, this financial support is designed to motivate students and researchers to develop proposals that could be implemented in the regulation and adoption of cryptocurrencies in the region.

With this program, the University of Chile positions itself at the forefront of cryptocurrency research in Latin America, providing a framework for future legal professionals and financial law experts to tackle the regulatory and dogmatic challenges of this emerging digital economy.
