The Algorand Foundation has confirmed the launch of Afghanistan’s first end-to-end digital microfinance solution.

The Foundation is working with the UN Capital Development Fund and UN Development’s Afghanistan Digital Prosperity Project, delivered through HesabPay. The Algorand blockchain settles the Shariah-compliant disbursements, daily repayments, and all related transactions.

HesabPay uses the Algorand blockchain with support from the United Nations for digital transfers to needy communities. The platform enables them to have their own digital accounts and to cash out directly at any time. Algorand has said that in 2025, HesabPay distributed $30 million in aid to 130,000 families in Afghanistan and processed 15 million transactions on Algorand.

In a use case spotlighted by the UN, a small grocery store owner called Sayed Ahmad revealed that the platform has transformed the Afghan marketplace. Once dominated by cash, now digital payments have made life “simple and easy.” This has prevented theft and made transactions efficient.

With the new end-to-end digital microfinance solution, Afghans such as Sayed Ahmad will be able to apply for loans to expand their businesses or cover a shortfall. This will bring economic empowerment to a troubled region.

Beyond the UN, the platform has been involved in humanitarian efforts backed by the World Food Programme and Mercy Corps Ventures, which are keen to distribute digital cash to vulnerable and remote areas. It has also partnered with financial giants such as Mastercard and MoneyGram to extend its global reach.

Algorand Onboarding Unbanked Afghans

Algroand powers HeshabPay operations by providing the infrastructure that offers an alternative to traditional banking systems, providing the scalability, speed, and cost-efficiency required. Another advantage of using blockchain is real-time transparency in aid distribution that helps prevent fraud.

It is reported that roughly 85% of the Afghan population is unbanked. Algorand helps to onboard adults in 45 seconds on smartphones without the need for traditional infrastructure. This is not unique to Afghanistan; in different regions of Africa, South America, and Asia, there’s a vast opportunity for Algorand’s expansion.

As of writing, Algorand’s ALGO coin is trading at $0.1077 after a 2% drop in the last 24 hours.

The coin extends its weekly losses to 14% as it faces heavy bearish pressure. Like most altcoins, there’s been a disconnect between the project’s developments and price movements, frustrating investors. However, most long-term holders remain confident that a breakout is imminent and ALGO will be among the best performers.
